Several options are available for Trombones. Here are some general rules of thumb to consider:

Rotor or Trigger Trombone
This refers to a horn playing in both the Bb and F keys. Each key has a set of tubing that it utilizes. Single horns are usually used for jazz or beginning purposes.

Bell Type and Diameter
Large or medium bells change the tonal and projectional characteristics of the instrument. American concert players generally prefer a larger bell. Trombones may be purchased with Red, Gold Brass or Yellow Brass bells. The gold and red brass have a higher copper content and mellower tone, with red brass containing the most copper. Sterling Silver bells are also an option on some horns.

Bore Size
Trombone players equate bore size to a darker tone. While this is not completely true, it is an effective comparison. The larger the bore size generally results in a darker the tone and greater effort required to play. A concert player will probably opt for a larger bore where a jazz lead player may want the greater resistance and bright tone.

Open versus Closed Wrap
This refers to the tubing on the rotor section of the horn. Some players feel the open wrap keeps resistance down on the air flow, whereas others argue the other case. This is an option that is really determined by a player's preference.
